Corporate loan growth outpaces retail advances at top private banks

Corporate lending at top Indian private banks surged significantly in the June quarter. This corporate loan growth far outpaced retail credit expansion, reaching 26% on average. Higher bond yields pushed companies back to mainstream lenders for working capital needs. This revival lifted overall bank credit growth to its fastest pace in over two years. Sectors like commercial real estate and infrastructure saw increased demand for loans.

India Inc is returning to banks for money, but retail borrowers aren’t keeping pace

India’s largest private banks are witnessing a shift in credit demand, with corporate and SME lending driving loan growth while retail borrowing remains subdued. Stronger working capital demand, refinancing and business banking boosted advances, but slower consumer credit growth and weaker CASA ratios continue to weigh on banks’ funding mix and margins.

Spark Capital's Devang Mehta bets on BFSI, consumption; sees metals, IT as tactical plays

Devang Mehta, Deputy Managing Director & CIO-Equity at Spark Capital Private Wealth, says banks and NBFCs are well placed to benefit from improving credit growth, a strengthening capex cycle and rising consumption. He expects BFSI to outperform as private banks recover and NBFCs remain in a sweet spot. Mehta also favours discretionary consumption, including jewellery and premium products, while viewing metals and IT as tactical bets rather than long-term compounders amid global volatility.

Tata Capital joins the race to own a piece of India's dormant wealth

Tata Capital's acquisition of an 88.6% stake in Kerala-based Yogloans signals growing confidence in India's fast-expanding gold loan market as lenders shift away from unsecured retail credit. The deal gives Tata Capital an established gold loan business with a ₹708 crore loan book, 162 branches and 32,000 customers, allowing it to tap a segment driven by rising gold prices, tighter regulations on unsecured lending and changing consumer attitudes towards using family gold as collateral.

ADB trims India's growth projection to 6.6% reflecting elevated energy prices

Asian Development Bank on Thursday lowered India's GDP growth projection to 6.6 per cent as against 6.9 per cent estimated earlier for the current fiscal on concerns of higher energy prices fuelled by the Middle East crisis. Despite the growth moderation, India still continues to be the fastest-growing major economy in the world, ADB said. India's GDP growth forecasts are revised down to 6.6 per cent for FY2026 (ending 31 March 2027) and maintained at 7.3 per cent for FY2027, Asian Development Outlook (ADO) July 2026 said. Growth will be supported by policy interventions to attract more foreign capital, as well as fuel tax cuts, targeted credit support, strong services exports, and public capital expenditure. The FY2027 growth forecast remains unchanged from April, underpinned by improved global conditions and export competitiveness gained through trade agreements with various partners. However, risks tilt to the downside driven by heightened geopolitical tensions, or weather-induced

Kotak Institutional removes ABB India, Siemens, Cummins India from model portfolio

Kotak Institutional Equities' Sanjeev Prasad prefers private banks over IT and expensive industrial stocks, citing attractive valuations, stable credit growth and the potential for re-rating. He warned that AI-driven pricing pressure makes it difficult to value IT companies and said investors should avoid chasing richly valued capital goods and electrification stocks despite strong long-term themes. Healthcare, hospitality, retail and telecom remain among his preferred sectors.
