INR slumps back beyond Rs 95 per dollar mark as dollar stays firm; positive local equities cap downside

The Indian rupee depreciated 67 paise to close near a three-week low of 95.23 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, as a strengthening dollar index weighed on emerging market currencies. The USD/INR pair witnessed significant pressure due to the strengthening of the American currency in the overseas market, persistent capital outflows, and broader Asian currency weakness. Moreover, market sentiment turned highly cautious, following the breach of the psychological level of 95.00. Local equities also rebounded driven by positive global cues, a drop in crude oil prices, and easing geopolitical tensions. The NSE Nifty 50 gained 140.10 points (0.59%) to close at 24,005.85, while the BSE Sensex climbed 443.97 points (0.58%) to settle at 76,922.64.

India's sound macroeconomic fundamentals provide greater resilience to external shocks, says RBI

Reserve Bank released the June 2026 edition of the Financial Stability Report (FSR) today. It noted that despite repeated shocks, the global financial system has thus far demonstrated notable resilience, with markets remaining orderly after an initial bout of volatility following the outbreak of the West Asia conflict. Nevertheless, global financial stability risks remain elevated. Persistent supply chain uncertainties could tighten financial conditions and revive inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, elevated public debt, bond market fragilities, stretched asset valuations, and leveraged NBFIs remain key vulnerabilities that could amplify future shocks.

The $1 trillion AI 'arms race' is fueling a hidden supercycle and it's not just chips

DBS Bank says the global AI arms race is driving a multi-year capex supercycle extending beyond semiconductors into energy, networking, infrastructure and data centres. The bank expects AI spending, sovereign AI investments and rising power demand to create new investment opportunities while reshaping portfolio allocation amid persistent inflation and geopolitical risks.

Home sales fall to three-year low in June quarter

Home sales experienced a notable dip in the June quarter, marking the slowest performance since early 2023. Persistent global uncertainties and supply chain issues have dampened buyer sentiment. Despite this, new project launches saw an annual increase, particularly in premium segments and infrastructure-driven areas. While most major cities saw sales decline, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru registered modest yearly growth.

SBI Securities prefers HDFC Bank, sees long-term upside in metals

Sunny Agarwal, Head Fundamental Research, Retail Desk at SBI Securities, remains positive on private banks, preferring HDFC Bank over Kotak Mahindra Bank after the lender received a clean legal review. He says Persistent Systems' acquisition benefits may take up to eight quarters to materialise, while slower growth remains a near-term concern. Agarwal is also bullish on the metals sector, with Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys as his top pick, and remains positive on Astral over the long term despite near-term challenges.

Pulse of the Street: Stocks edge for another week, but conviction is missing

Global Market: BOJ policymakers push for faster rate hikes as inflation risks mount

The Bank of Japan is growing more concerned about persistent inflation, with some policymakers advocating faster interest rate hikes after raising the policy rate to 1%, the highest in 31 years. Officials cited rising cost pressures from a weak yen, high energy prices and strong AI-driven demand, with some members suggesting rates may need to move closer to a neutral level of around 2% through gradual but more frequent increases.

FIIs, weak global cues among 5 factors that could keep D-St under pressure this week

Indian stock markets may remain under pressure this week amid persistent FII selling, weak global cues, rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and elevated crude oil prices. While RBI’s policy measures and steps to attract foreign capital could support sentiment, investors will closely track monsoon progress, inflation concerns, global market trends and institutional flows for further market direction.
