Sensex rises over 150 points, Nifty above 23,900 as investors weigh Iran tensions, weak monsoon concerns

Indian stock markets opened the second half of 2026 with modest gains after recent declines. Investors are closely watching escalating US-Iran tensions, which are impacting oil prices, and a concerningly weak monsoon season. Analysts suggest adjusting portfolios towards fixed income and monsoon-proof sectors like healthcare and defense to mitigate potential fallout from the dry spell.

Sensex falls 50 points, Nifty above 24,050; Eternal, Sun Pharma, TechM rise 1%

Indian stock markets traded mixed on Monday, with Sensex dipping slightly and Nifty inching higher amidst rising oil prices due to Iran-US tensions. While some blue-chips gained, broader markets saw a minor decline. Analysts suggest a potential market upturn due to easing FII selling and South Korea's volatility, but a deficient monsoon remains a concern. Upcoming Q1 results are expected to drive stock-specific movements.

Firm strength in dollar offsets gains in INR made from positive equities and easing oil prices

The Indian rupee depreciated 34 paise to close at 94.67 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday, weighed down by the strength of the American currency in the overseas market. Rupee witnessed volatility as steady debt and deposit inflows pulled the domestic currency in one way, while the lack of clarity on the Middle East peace deal and a firm dollar pulled it the other way. The Indian stock market, which snapped a five-day winning streak on Friday, rebounded and closed higher on Monday, lifted by gains in technology, healthcare and oil sectors. The mood in the market remained positive amid reports of progress in US-Iran peace talks. Additionally, weak oil prices eased concerns about inflation. The benchmark BSE Sensex closed up by 291.17 points or 0.38% at 77,094.07 after scaling a low of 77,160.67 and a high of 77,325.56 intraday. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 94.42, registering a decline of 9 paise from its previous close. In intraday trade, ...

INR surges amid sharp pull back in oil prices; Sensex and Nifty jump by around 2%

The Indian rupee surged 67 paise to close at 95.18 (provisional) against the greenback on Friday as global oil prices fell sharply after US President Donald Trump indicated an imminent deal with Iran. A firm trend in domestic equity markets and a weaker American currency also supported the rupee during the day. Indian shares closed Friday's session on a buoyant note in a broad-based rally, with both frontline and broader market indexes posting sharp gains. The BSE Sensex settled at 75,527.95, surging 1,695.40 points (2.30%), and the NSE Nifty50 ended at 23,622.90, climbing 461.30 points (1.99%). Trump has reportedly said a deal to end the war with Iran is nearly complete, and is expected to be signed over the weekend in Europe, as he called off military strikes on the Islamic Republic hours after threatening to take control of its oil industry.
