The Government of Singapore, HDFC Mutual Fund and the Monetary Authority of Singapore bought promoter shares worth thousands of crores in Vishal Mega Mart as Samayat Services LLP offloaded a 14% stake via bulk deals. The stock fell despite solid quarterly profit and revenue growth.

Closing Bell: Market fails to hold gains, end lower amid late selling
Biggest Nifty losers were HDFC Bank, ONGC, HDFC Life, Titan Company, Apollo Hospitals, while gainers included Hindalco Industries, Trent, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Eternal. Among sectors, IT, capital goods and metal indices gained 1% each, while auto, bank, oil & gas ended lower. The Nifty midcap index rose 0.6 percent and smallcap index added nearly 1 percent.

Interglobe Aviation, Max Healthcare, Power Grid Corp, Wipro, Eternal were among biggest gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank. All the sectoral indices ended in the green with Capital Goods, Oil & Gas, Power, Infra, Media, Realty, Consumer Durables, IT rise 2% each. Eternal, Tata Steel, M&M, HDFC Life and Bharat Electronics were among top gainers on the Nifty, while losers were Wipro, Tata Consumer, Infosys, Cipla, ITC. Among sectors, except FMCG ( down 0.7%) and IT (down 1%), all other indices ended in the green with capital goods, telecom, auto, infra, media, metal, realty, private bank up 1-2 percent.
