Rupee appreciates for 3rd straight day on easing West Asia tensions
The rupee appreciated for the third straight session on Tuesday to close 5 paise higher at 94.53 (provisional) against the US dollar, supported by easing West Asia tensions and extended fall in crude oil prices. Forex traders said that with the reported de-escalation of the US-Iran conflict and diplomatic agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, the immediate threat to global energy supplies has significantly reduced. Moreover, softening of the US dollar and a decline in US treasury yields also supported the USD/INR pair, they said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 94.69 against the US dollar and traded in the range of 94.48-94.71. Eventually, it settled at 94.53 (provisional), up 5 paise from its previous close. Silver prices rallied by Rs 6,066 to Rs 2.52 lakh per kilogram in futures trade on Monday as easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and a weaker US dollar improved sentiment in the bullion market. On the Multi Commodity Exchange, the white metal for July delivery surged Rs 6,066, or 2.46 per cent, to Rs 2,52,252 per kilogram in a business turnover of 11,420 lots. In the past week, silver fell Rs 2,351, or nearly 1 per cent, to Rs 2.46 lakh per kg. The rebound comes after US and Iranian officials announced that they had reached an initial agreement to end the conflict, lift the US naval blockade on Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy supplies.
