Sensex dives 850 pts, Nifty slips below 24,200 amid oil shock and weak global cues

The equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty tumbled on Thursday, extending losses for a second straight session. Firm crude oil prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions rattled sentiment. Brent crude surged for the fourth consecutive day to around $103 per barrel amid uncertainty over US-Iran talks and fresh concerns around the Strait of Hormuz. Weak Asian cues and persistent foreign fund outflows deepened the sell-off. The Nifty slipped below the 24,200 mark, dragged by auto, PSU banks and consumer durables stocks, while pharma and healthcare shares saw selective buying. Investors stayed cautious, closely tracking the ongoing Q4 earnings season for further triggers.

Vedanta upside intact over 2–5 years; midcap IT better placed than large peers: Deven Choksey

Deven Choksey, MD of DRChoksey Finserv Private Limited, says IT remains in transition as large players shift toward AI-led, outcome-based models, while mid-tier firms like Persistent and Tata Elxsi stay better placed. He sees housing finance improving on write-backs and growth, and remains positive on AMCs amid rising AUM flows. Insurance growth stays steady, while engineering names face margin volatility. On Vedanta, he believes the demerger keeps the 2–5-year value story intact.

Share buybacks this month: Wipro, Aurobindo Pharma, 2 other stocks to watch out for

Four companies—Wipro, Cyient, Windlas Biotech, and Aurobindo Pharma—are set to announce or act on share buybacks this month, with Aurobindo’s record date due soon. Buybacks involve companies repurchasing shares to boost value, use surplus cash, or strengthen ownership. Meanwhile, new rules under the Finance Bill 2026 impose a 12% surcharge on buyback-related capital gains for promoters, while other investors remain taxed as per existing norms.
