Financials were under pressure, with ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank slipping. On the upside, stocks like Tata Consumer Products, NTPC and Hindustan Unilever emerged as key gainers.

Tata Steel, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, SBI Life Insurance, L&T, JSW Steel were among major losers on the Nifty, while gainers included Coal India, Bharti Airtel, Infosys, Tech Mahindra.

The rally in banking stocks was broad-based, with all 14 Bank Nifty constituents ending higher. The strong gains came as investors cheered signs of a possible breakthrough in the US-Iran conflict.

The Nifty midcap index was up 0.3 percent, while smallcap index ended flat.
