FPIs continue sell-off in April, pull out ₹48,213 crore in 10 days

Foreign investors maintained their aggressive sell-off in Indian equities, withdrawing Rs 48,213 crore (USD 5.14 billion) in the first 10 days of April, as rising geopolitical tensions and global macroeconomic uncertainties reduced risk appetite. The sell-off follows a record outflow of Rs 1.17 lakh crore (about USD 12.7 billion) in March, the worst monthly exodus on record. The sharp reversal comes after FPIs had infused Rs 22,615 crore in February, marking the highest monthly inflow in 17 months. With the latest withdrawals, total outflows by foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have surged to Rs 1.8 lakh crore in 2026 so far. In April alone, foreign investors withdrew equities worth Rs 48,213 crore from the cash market till April 10, according to NSDL data. Market participants attributed the sustained selling pressure to a combination of global macroeconomic headwinds and heightened geopolitical risks. Avoid OMCs; prefer defence and summer plays: Chola Securities

Dharmesh Kant, Head of Research at Chola Securities, says oil marketing companies remain largely avoidable as they are cyclical, commodity-linked businesses with limited long-term wealth creation potential, especially as renewable energy gains share. He advises selective buying in market declines, favouring defence stocks like BEL and HAL and summer-linked plays such as LG Electronics and Blue Star. Kant also sees corrections in InterGlobe Aviation as a potential long-term buying opportunity despite near-term volatility.

No cultural taboo: The rich go for gold loan as metal soars

India's gold loan sector is evolving rapidly and redefining the way wealth is perceived and leveraged. Historically seen as a specialty service, it is now a popular financing option for the well-to-do. The prevalence of loans over ₹5 lakh is a clear indicator of this cultural evolution. This phenomenon is largely propelled by soaring gold prices and progressive government policies.

Watch | Sanjay Parekh on where he sees value in banks, IT, cement and telecom stocks

Sohum Asset Managers’ Founder & CIO, Sanjay Parekh, says markets look sluggish despite improving macro conditions, with Q3 Nifty earnings near 8–9%. He sees recovery in CVs (Ashok Leyland), credit growth at ICICI Bank and gradual picka a up in cement and steel. Portfolio stays domestic-focused: overweight telecom, NBFCs, industrials, cement, utilities, ports and logistics; underweight oil & gas and banks, zero FMCG. Watching IT names like Infosys and TCS, mid-cap tech (Persistent, Coforge, Mastek), defence HAL, quick commerce Zomato and Swiggy, and capital goods L&T, JSW Energy.
