Closing Bell: Market fails to hold gains, end lower amid late selling
Biggest Nifty losers were HDFC Bank, ONGC, HDFC Life, Titan Company, Apollo Hospitals, while gainers included Hindalco Industries, Trent, Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Eternal. Among sectors, IT, capital goods and metal indices gained 1% each, while auto, bank, oil & gas ended lower. The Nifty midcap index rose 0.6 percent and smallcap index added nearly 1 percent.

More than 100 stocks touched their 52-week high on the BSE, including Himadri Speciality, HFCL, Sai Life Sciences, Coal India, Hitachi Energy, Navin Fluorine, ONGC, Apar Industries, MCX India, Lloyds Metals, Chennai Petro, among others.

Shares of Mahanagar Gas (MGL) declined 2 percent after posting weaker sequential Q4 earnings, with net profit declining 35.4% QoQ to Rs 130 crore from Rs 201 crore. Revenue also slipped marginally by 0.4% QoQ to Rs 2,052 crore from Rs 2,060 crore.

Hindalco Industries, Power Grid Corp, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle, Eternal, NTPC were among major gainers on the Nifty, while losers were ONGC, ITC, HDFC Life, HDFC Bank, Wipro.

Bharat Electronics, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki were among major gainers on the Sensex, while losers were Power Grid Corporation, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank and Eternal. Among sectors, auto, pharma, oil & gas, PSU Bank telecom, metal added 0.4-1%, while media index shed 0.7%. Nifty Midcap index rose 0.6%, while smallcap index ended flat.
