The India VIX nearly doubled in a month, reflecting rising fear among investors amid geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty. Surging crude prices and persistent foreign selling have triggered sharp equity declines, with the Nifty 50 down 8%, keeping markets volatile and investors cautious.
Some low beta stocks shine as market volatility rises
Amidst rising market volatility and geopolitical tensions, low beta stocks are gaining prominence. Over one in four BSE 500 stocks have shown positive returns in the past month, with many exhibiting lower volatility than the broader market. Several companies with India-centric operations and strong financial growth have achieved double-digit returns across multiple periods.

Closing Bell: Sensex, Nifty end flat amid volatility; pharma, oil & gas gain, media falls
Bharat Electronics, Adani Ports, Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel, Maruti Suzuki were among major gainers on the Sensex, while losers were Power Grid Corporation, Trent, Bajaj Finserv, HDFC Bank and Eternal. Among sectors, auto, pharma, oil & gas, PSU Bank telecom, metal added 0.4-1%, while media index shed 0.7%. Nifty Midcap index rose 0.6%, while smallcap index ended flat.

Indian equity markets turned volatile with the Sensex tumbling over 400 points from the day’s high and the Nifty slipping nearly 100 points. Except Consumer Durables and PSU Bank, all other sectoral indices ended in the green with Information Technology rose 2.5%, Metal index gained 1.5%, Realty index up 1.7% and Media index jumped 1%. The Nifty midcap index was up 0.3 percent, while smallcap index ended flat.
