INR edges closer to a critical 97/$ threshold

The Indian rupee is seen in deep distress as the counter is moving towards breaking yet another key historic mark in opening trades on Wednesday. INR opened at Rs 96.89 per dollar and hit a low of 96.95 so far during the day. Yesterday, rupee slipped to a record low of 96.60 against the US dollar before settling at 96.52, weighed down by soaring crude oil prices, persistent foreign capital outflows, and a resilient dollar buoyed by global risk-aversion. The rupee is turning to be Asia's worst-performing currency in 2026. The currency has depreciated 1.5 per cent this month and more than 7 per cent so far this year. Rupee remains vulnerable to rising crude oil prices and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the Indian equity benchmarks surrendered their early morning gains in a highly volatile trading session to settle marginally lower due to late profit-booking. The BSE Sensex declined 114.19 points (0.15%) to close at 75,200.85, while the NSE Nifty 50 slipped 31.95 points

Mcap of 9 top valued firms erodes by ₹3.12 trn, Reliance biggest laggard

The combined market valuation of nine of the top 10 valued firms eroded by Rs 3.12 lakh crore last week, with Reliance Industries taking the biggest hit. Last week, the 30-share BSE Sensex plunged by 2,090.2 points, or 2.7 per cent, while the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 532.65 points, or 2.2 per cent. "Markets ended the week lower, breaking out of their three-week consolidation phase amid lingering geopolitical tensions in West Asia, persistent weakness in the rupee, and rising inflationary concerns," Ajit Mishra SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. The sharp rise in crude oil prices above the USD 105-per-barrel mark intensified worries over imported inflation, fiscal stress, and pressure on corporate margins, he said. From the top-10 pack, Bharti Airtel emerged as the only winner. The market valuation of Reliance Industries tumbled Rs 1,34,445.77 crore to Rs 18,08,420.81 crore. State Bank of India's valuation eroded by Rs 52,245.3 crore to Rs 8,88,862.32 crore. The valua

Equity MFs inflow dips 5% in April; SIP contributions fall to ₹31,115 cr

Equity-oriented mutual fund schemes garnered a net inflow of Rs 38,440 crore in April, marking a 5 per cent decline from the preceding month, amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, fluctuating crude oil prices, and concerns about global growth. Moreover, monthly contributions through SIPs (Systematic Investment Plans) declined to Rs 31,115 crore last month from Rs 32,087 crore in March, according to data released by industry body Amfi on Monday. Overall, the industry recorded a net infusion of Rs 3.22 lakh crore in April after witnessing an outflow of Rs 2.4 lakh crore in March. This was contributed by a huge inflow of Rs 2.5 lakh crore in the debt funds. The inflow has lifted the industry's assets under management by 11 per cent to Rs 81.92 lakh crore at the end of April, up from Rs 73.73 lakh crore at the end of March. This was driven by strong positive flows across segments and market to market gains witnessed during the month, said Venkat Chalasani, Chief Executive at ...

Mcap of 4 most valued firms erodes by ₹1 trn, SBI biggest laggard

The combined market valuation of four of the top-10 most valued firms eroded by Rs 1 lakh crore last week, with State Bank of India taking the biggest hit, amid a range-bound trend in equities. Last week, the BSE benchmark Sensex climbed 414.69 points or 0.53 per cent, and the NSE Nifty went up by 178.6 points or 0.74 per cent. "Indian equity markets witnessed a volatile and range-bound week, with sentiment remaining cautious despite intermittent recovery attempts. Early optimism driven by hopes of de-escalation in the Middle East and easing oil prices faded quickly as renewed tensions between the US and Iran resurfaced," Ponmudi R, CEO - Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said. While Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Larsen & Toubro faced erosion from their valuation, Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bajaj Finance, Hindustan Unilever and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) were the gainers from the pack. ...
