Markets are expected to remain event-driven with persistent volatility due to elevated crude oil prices, a weakening rupee, rising bond yields, and inflationary concerns. Despite resilient domestic earnings, investors are wary of the second-order impacts on inflation and the RBI's policy. The India VIX rose to 19.63, indicating market fear.

Mcap of 9 top valued firms erodes by ₹3.12 trn, Reliance biggest laggard

The combined market valuation of nine of the top 10 valued firms eroded by Rs 3.12 lakh crore last week, with Reliance Industries taking the biggest hit. Last week, the 30-share BSE Sensex plunged by 2,090.2 points, or 2.7 per cent, while the 50-share NSE Nifty declined 532.65 points, or 2.2 per cent. "Markets ended the week lower, breaking out of their three-week consolidation phase amid lingering geopolitical tensions in West Asia, persistent weakness in the rupee, and rising inflationary concerns," Ajit Mishra SVP, Research, Religare Broking Ltd, said. The sharp rise in crude oil prices above the USD 105-per-barrel mark intensified worries over imported inflation, fiscal stress, and pressure on corporate margins, he said. From the top-10 pack, Bharti Airtel emerged as the only winner. The market valuation of Reliance Industries tumbled Rs 1,34,445.77 crore to Rs 18,08,420.81 crore. State Bank of India's valuation eroded by Rs 52,245.3 crore to Rs 8,88,862.32 crore. The valua

INR closes at all-time low as global risk aversion resurfaces

The Indian rupee depreciated 35 paise to close at an all-time low of 95.63 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, as renewed tension between the US and Iran has led to risk aversion in global markets. Market sentiment remained dominated by fears that the 10-week-old conflict could further tighten global supply, particularly after President Donald Trump rejected Tehran's latest response to a US-backed peace proposal, calling it totally unacceptable. Moreover, market participants interpreted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comments over the weekend regarding fuel conservation and lower imports as a subtle acknowledgement that India's trade deficit and balance-of-payments pressures could worsen if crude prices remain elevated for longer. The Sensex tumbled 1,456.04 points (1.92%) to settle at 74,559.24, while the Nifty 50 dropped 436.30 points (1.83%) to end at 23,379.55.
